TEA WITH ARTIST
Hamimi Design takes a unique approach to Moroccan traditional craft and design. The products are designed in the studio in Marrakech. The products provide a window into the past and a look forward to contemporary Morocco. All are handcrafted. Perhaps the most eye-catching and spectacular are the crocheted lampshades crafted by women in a village near Marrakech. These shades are handcrafted to provide a contemporary Moroccan flair. A visit to the Hamimi Design studio/workshop will introduce you to an approach to keeping Moroccan crafts alive.
In Hamimi’s own words:
At Hamimi we offer a fresh take on Moroccan design, capturing the country’s exotic culture and honoring traditional craftsmanship. Hamimi is a boutique brother and sister brand, with Alex based in Brisbane and Rebecca on the ground in Marrakech, where she works with a team of local artisans that bring our designs to life.
Daily life in Marrakech provides an endless source of creative inspiration – it’s a place where you can have one foot in the very distant past and the other seemingly in the future. Our designs embrace the old and the new, combining traditional materials and techniques with a contemporary sensibility. We appreciate texture and are not afraid of using colour. We like to mix old and new, traditional and modern, to produce items of contemporary yet timeless appeal.
In this age of mass production, we instead focus on hand crafting our products in the traditional artisan way. Each product is invested with human touch – made by hand with heart.
Our crochet lights, jewelry and handbags are handmade by a small community of women in a village just outside Marrakech. By partnering with these women we aim to help keep their traditional skills alive and create a brighter future for them and their families.
